After the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco last year, consumers and enthusiasts are eagerly waiting for Samsung to make a strong comeback with the Galaxy S8 this year. With the Galaxy S7 series doing so well last year, Samsung is expected to come out with another impressive flagship handset series this year with the Galaxy S8.

If you think that innovation in the smartphone market has stalled, I am pretty sure the Galaxy S8 will make you reconsider that. The handset is going to push the levels of innovation in the smartphone market once again.

What Will Make the Galaxy S8 So Special?

If rumors and leaked photos are to be believed, the Galaxy S8 and its ‘Plus’ sibling are going to feature very minimal bezels. The minimum bezels surrounding the display will allow Samsung to fit in a bigger screen on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus without greatly increasing the overall dimensions of the handsets. Xiaomi launched the Mi Mix with insanely thin bezels last year as a concept phone, but with the Galaxy S8 this year, Samsung is going to turn that concept into a reality.

To reduce the bezels on the front of the device to a minimum, Samsung has ditched capacitive navigation keys in favor of on-screen buttons. The company has also moved the fingerprint scanner to the rear of the device beside the camera sensor for this. The rear/overall design of the handsets are going to remain largely the same, with Samsung only making some minor tweaks here and there to improve the ergonomics.

Unlike the last two years, there will not be an ‘edge’ variant of Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S handset this year. Instead, the company will launch a ‘Plus’ variant with a bigger screen. The Galaxy S8 is already rumored to come with a 5.7-inch screen thereby putting it into the phablet category. For the Galaxy S8 Plus though, Samsung is planning on going even bigger with a 6.2-inch screen. The dimensions of both phones will be similar to the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge from last year, though, thanks to the reduction in bezel space.

It’s Going To Be All About the Display and Bixby

While the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus are going to make use of Samsung’s own Exynos 8895 chipset and/or a Snapdragon 835 chipset, an iris scanner, fast storage, and plenty of RAM, the handsets are going to be all about their bezel-less display. In addition, Samsung will also be using the handsets as a launch platform for its AI-powered virtual assistant, Bixby.

The assistant will make use of the technology that Samsung acquired from Viv last year and will reportedly support 7-8 languages. In a bid to make its assistant more accessible, Samsung will reportedly also include a dedicated physical button on the Galaxy S8 handsets to quickly trigger the assistant.

Various leaks have already provided us with the nitty gritty details of the Galaxy S8 specifications. The handset will be powered by Samsung’s own Exynos 8895 chipset, while the US variant will feature a Snapdragon 835 chipset. Both chipsets are based on the 10nm fabrication process and should be extremely power efficient. The Chinese and Korean variants will feature 6GB RAM, while the rest of the world will get the variant with 4GB of RAM. The base storage of the handset is set at 64GB, and it will also feature a microSD card slot.

The rear camera of the handsets will be very similar to what is found on the Galaxy S7/edge. This means we are looking at a 12MP Dual Pixel shooter with f/1.7 aperture and large 1.44u pixels. The front camera is getting an upgrade and will now feature an 8MP sensor. It will also be accompanied by a secondary 3.7MP RGB camera sensor that will help improve the facial and iris scanner recognition.

Disappointingly perhaps, despite both phones coming with significantly larger 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch QHD+ display, they will come with 3000mAh and 3600mAh batteries — the same as what is found inside the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge.

Galaxy Galaxy S8 Release Date

Sadly, due to the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco and Samsung’s improved security measures will lead the company to delay the unveiling of the Galaxy S8 by a month. While the Korean company has usually unveiled its flagship Galaxy S handset at MWC every year, it will be skipping the event this year. Instead, the Galaxy S8 will now be unveiled on March 29 at an event in New York, with retail availability scheduled to begin from April 21.
